Journey to the West 629, The historical event of Xúan玄-Zhùang奘

The original novel [Journey To The West] was based on historical fact of Xúan-Zhùang 玄奘 seeking Buddhist scriptures in the West during the Tάng Dynasty.

Xúan-Zhùang was born in 596 A.D. in the Súi隋  Dynasty 581-618. He became a monk at age 13 in 600 A.D.

Back in 250 A.D., Monk Zhu Shihang pioneered to Xin-Jiang (Northwestern border of China) to collect the Buddhist scriptures. In 627 A.D., Xúan-Zhùang violated the prohibition and ventured to the West. In a span of more than 300 years, 105 monks in 35 groups went west in search of the Buddhist scriptures. Out of these adventurists, 30 eventually reached India and returned to China.

Xúan-Zhùang came back to Cháng-An, the Capital at age 50, in the spring of 645 A.D. Having completed a journey of 25,000 Km, he brought back 520 kinds of Buddhist scriptures in 657 parts. He died in 664 A.D.

A thousand years passed, Xúan-Zhùang's expedition was so popular that he had become a deified figure in China. As early as in the South Song 南宋 1127-1279 and the Yúan Dynasty 元 1279-1368, subjects related to Monk Tάng going West appeared frequently in stage plays. In the novel [Stories of The Monk Collecting Scriptures In the Tάng Dynasty  大唐玄奘取經平話], the author altered the historical fact by claiming that Xúan-Zhùang had gone West following an imperial order instead of violating the prohibition.

In the Yúan Dynasty, stories of Monkey King also appeared in plays such as [Monk Tάng 唐三藏], [Party On The Fairy Pond 瑤池會], and [Party Of Fairy Peaches 蟠桃會]. By 1500 A.D., in the Míng Dynasty 明 1368-1644, [JOURNEY TO THE WEST 西遊記] came out. It had resulted from a combination of folk stories, stage plays, and the classical novel [Accounts of Journey To The West].

In our American WJ series, we don't call him Monk Táng, always give his original name Xúan玄-Zhùang奘, also, we refer all the fictiones' novels related [Journey to the West] as [West Journey] all the way.

The Princess remembered that incident and therefore refused to lend them the fan. Monkey King changed himself into an insect and hid among the tea leaves. replaced fire, moisture replaced dryness. Walking on the smooth paths, Monk Tάng and his team easily passed through the mountain and continued their journey westward.

West Journey Supplement 1640, by Dông Shuo 董說

[The Enlarged Version Of JOURNEY To THE WEST 西遊補] comprises 16 chapters. The novel follows chapter 61 [Gaining the Palm Leaf Fan On 3rd Try] from the original [Journey To The West 西遊記]. The enlarged version was written by Dong3 Shuo 董說, master of Serenity House.

Dong3 came from a declining wealthy family in Hú Zhou, Zhe4-Jiang Province. His father wrote poems for a living. Dong was orphaned in boyhood when his father died at age 42.

In 1640, Dong completed [The Enlarged Version of JOURNEY TO THE WEST] at age 20. He became a monk at age 33. In the same year, General Zhang Xian-Zhong occupied Si4-Chuang Province while Li3 Zi4-Cheng2 took control of He2-Nan2. 4 years later, the Qing Dynasty 清(1644-1911) replaced the Míng Dynasty (1368-1644). In his life time, Dong wrote 120 books many of which were burned by him. Had his sons not begged him in great sorrow, all of his books would have become ashes.

[The Enlarged Version Of JOURNEY TO THE WEST 西遊補] follows the story line of the original novel. After Monk Tάng and his team passed through Mountain Flame, they rested under a peony tree, where they encounter the most vicious demon- Mackerel Spirit, the "Lust Demon" 鯖魚精.

Where did Mackerel Spirit originate? At the beginning of life, light substances rose to the sky, heavy substances formed the earth. The in-betweens, humans, settled on the earth. The near-light substances and the least heavy substances gathered in the Flower-Fruit Mountain 花果山, which created Monkey King 孫悟空. The near heavy substances and the least light substances congregated in the Little Moon Cave 小月洞, which created Mackerel Spirit. Monkey King and Mackerel Spirit were born at exactly the same moment, same day, same month and same year. However, Monkey King represented righteousness and Mackerel Spirit symbolized evilness.

Mackerel Spirit's capacity overwhelmed Monkey King's by 10 times. He had a huge body with its head and feet stretching from Mountain Kunlun to the star of Mystery. He claimed himself the "Blue Green World
青青世界" and exercised great power of manipulation.

Mackerel Spirit was actually a spirit of desire, often appearing in invisible forms. It had potentials of attacking anyone during his various emotional states: sad, happy or hesitant. It could also attack anyone from a distance. Once the desire attached itself on someone, it would remain there eternally.

In [Journey To The West 西遊記] all the demons displayed a common goal, that is, to kill Monk Tάng and eat his flesh. However, In [The Enlarged Version Of JOURNEY TO THE WEST 西遊補] Mackerel Spirit adapted different strategies as to how to achieve the same goal. He knew that to get Monk Táng, he'd have to eliminate Monkey King, the most powerful aide to Monk Táng. Being aware that it wasn't easy to attack Monkey King when he was sober, Markevel Spirit planned to sneak into his dream and take advantage of his sexual desire. Once aroused, Monkey King would indulge in passionate imagination and sexual pleasure, which would make him a vulnerable victim.

[The Enlarged Version Of JOURNEY TO THE WEST 西遊補] emphasizes Monkey King's dreams and his sextual desire. Chapter 1 is titled [The Poeny Tree Red, Mackerel Spirit Exhales Around 牡丹紅鯖魚吐氣;
Condoling Lament Dead, Monkey King Mourns Dreams 送冤文猴聖留連.] As the team moved away from Mountain Flame, they stopped at a mountain path covered by fallen flowers. A peony tree immediately caught
everyone's attention.

While Monkey King was admiring the bright colors of the peony. Monk Tάng commented that the peony wasn't red, Monkey King's thought was; Fallen flowers were no different from unblossomed ones.

Just then, a group of youngsters emerged and provoked them. Being free from passion, Monkey King killed all of them. A while later, he turned compassionate and wrote a message of condolence. Then he felt confused and let his dream sneak in.

Chapter 2 is titled [Western Way Phantom New Tάng Dynasty 西方路幻出新唐; In the Green Jade Palace Meeting The Unsurpassed Finesse Emperor 緣玉殿風華天子.] In the dream, Monkey King was trying
to beg some food for the team, a Tάng castle stood in front of him. He was puzzled by the new emperor and the change of direction.

Monkey King asked the Gnomes, but he got no reply; he tried to find out from the Heaven God, but failed once again. Finally Monkey King went to Heaven and requested to see the Jade Emperor- he was confused entrance. The reason being, he had stolen Ling2-Xiao Palace, therefore, there was no gate left. Disappointed, Monkey King had to return to the Green Jade Palace.

The 3rd chapter is titled [Peach-Blossom Edict Rewards Monk Tάng 桃花鉞詔頒玄奘; Chopped-Sky Chisel Amazes Monkey King 鑿天斧驚動心猿] The new emperor appointed Monk Tάng to the position of Command-In-Chief.

Monkey saw the Tάng Dynasty which was not supposed to appear in the western journey, then the confused Monkey King caught the sight of 500 troops splitting the sky with axes. He overheard them talking about
Monk Táng, who had entered the Green World and the Little Moon King, who wanted to present Monk Tάng half of the Green World as a gift for the two had been a couple in their previous lives. Since Monk Tάng insisted to go West for the scriptures, the Little Moon King had ordered these troops to clear all the path toward the Jade Emperor's Palace to collect the scriptures.

Unfortunately, the troops deviated from the right direction and mistakenly destroyed Ling2-Xiao Palace. The heaven held Monkey King responsible for the invasion; the earth also attributed Monkey King's killing of the youngsters to this accident. Thus Monkey King became a scapegoat.

The 4th chapter is titled [Entering the Labyrinth Of Thousands Of Mirror when a thought occurs 一竇開時迷萬鏡; Losing oneself when others appear 物形現處我形亡.] Monkey King concluded that this Little Moon
King must be a demon. so he rose up and bumped into a castle, which turned out to be the Green World. Once inside, Monkey King saw no signs of living creatures. He became angry and poked about randomly.

Suddenly, Monkey King hit a green stone and fell down at a bright entrance. What stood in front of him was a glazed pagoda walled by precious mirrors, about ten thousand of them. The mirrors differed in sizes and shapes. Among them were the Heavenly King Animal Button Mirror, White Jade Heart Mirror, Self-Doubt Mirror, Flower Mirror, Wind Mirror, Male and Female Mirror, Purple Silk Lotus Mirror, Water Mirror, Ice Plat-Form Mirror, Iron-Faced Lotus Mirror, Self Mirror, People Mirror, Moon Mirror, South Sea Mirror, Queen's Mirror, Green Lock Mirror, Serenity Mirror, Black Mirror, Bronze Mirror, Parrot Mirror, Silence Mirror, Image Mirror, First Queen's Mirror, One Smile Mirror, Pillow Mirror, Scenery Gone Mirror, Flight Mirror...

Monkey King was fun-loving. He wanted to see thousands of reflections in the mirrors. Strange enough, when he tried, he saw Liú Bó-Qing 劉伯欽, who once rescued him on Wu-hang Mountain. Liu informed Monkey
King that the whole world was controlled by the mirrors each of which had its designated realm of reign. The mirror pagoda was nick-named "Three Thousand Worlds of a Big Thousand Worlds"... Before he could continue, an old lady appeared and dragged Liu away.

Uncontested, Monkey King had to start with a few mirrors by himself. The pan excellence mirror displayed a scene during publishment of candidates of the imperial examinations.

In front of the announcement board of examination result, the crowd became wild and restless, bustles and weeps, mingled with curses.

Some sat still, some broke their ink slabs, some ran around and were chased and beaten by their parents and teachers. Some burned their musical instruments and cried their hearts out. Some paced up and down and immersed in reading their own papers. Some laughed hysterically and stroke the tables, some comforted the failed by offering a brothel visit...

Those who became candidates either changed into new outfits or tried to conceal their happiness, or wrote on the walls, or condemned the examiners for others' failure, or forced the onlookers to read their names on the list, or talked volubly, or bragged about their predictive dreams the previous night.

Chapter 5 is titled [Carved Blue Mirror Dragged Monkey King Back To Ancient Times; 鏤青鏡心猿入古; Sun-Wừ-Kong frowned At The Green Pearl Pagoda 綠珠樓行者攢眉.] While examining the second par excellence mirror, Monkey King saw a stele carved with the words "Ancient World". He wanted to obtain the Mountain Banishing Bell from the Emperor of the Qin Dynasty 秦 BC 221-206 so that the bell could flatten the journey to the West. Monkey King was so absorbed in the thought that he merged into the mirror.

Chapter 6 is titled [Real Beauty Was Killed Over False's tears 半面淚痕真美死; Chu Emperor Was Worried For The Offer Of second girl friend 一句蘋香楚將愁.] Chapter 7 is titled [Chu3 Emperror Tells Stories Over Midnight 秦楚之際四聲鼓; True And False Beauties Appear In One Mirror 真假美人一鏡中.]

The Ancient Mirror showed a banquet scene entertained by ancient beauty Luzhu, Xishi and Sisi. Monkey King planned to disguise as a maid to get in, but he lost control and turned into Yuji, wife of Chu Emperor.

From the stories Chu had told him, Monkey King found out that Qin Emperor was staying in the Mystery World, located in front of the Future Mirror 未來鏡. When they strolled to the Jade Gate, Monkey King broke away and rolled into the Future Mirror.

Chapter 8 is titled [Eliminating Six Thieves In Future Mirror 一入未來除六賊; Passing Judgement While Being Yama For Half Day 半日閻羅決正邪.] Chapter 9 is titled [Trator Qin2 Gui4 Couldn't Atone For His Crime 秦檜百身難自贖; Monkey King Swore Allegiance To General Yue4 Fei 大聖一心皈穆王.]

In the Future Mirror, Monkey King killed the six thieves who intended to rob Yuji, disguised by Monkey King. Two young boys stopped him and told him about Yama's sudden death, then dragged him into the Gate of
Hell act as temporary Yama until the new Yama arrived. In Yama's Court, Monkey King brought the minister of the South Song Dynasty 南宋 1127-1279 Qin2 Gui4 秦檜 to trial.

Qin had send a gold plate 12 times in the name of Song Emperor to call back General Yue4 Fei 岳飛, who was fighting enemy in the front line. Later on, Qin killed Yue Fei and caused the collapse of the South Song Dynasty in the hands of the enemy. Up to the present, all Chinese address Qin "The Traitor" for this historical fact.

Monkey King made Qin climb the mountain of swords and plunge into an oil-boiling pan. Then he had Qin cut into pieces and grinded into ashes. Afterward, he brought Qin back to normal and started the cycle over. In addition, Monkey King ordered 150 iron-faced ghosts to insert 6 million needles into Qin's body.

Finally, to compensate for his treacherous deeds of sending 12 gold plates to withdraw General Yue4 Fei, Monkey King announced that Qin2 should be carved 12 times. The first time, he was carved in fish scale style. The second time, he was carved in water waves. The third time, snow flakes. When the fourth time began, General Yue4 Fei 岳飛 arrived at the Court.

Chapter 10 is titled [Returning To The Thousand-Mirror Labyrinth 萬鏡臺行者重歸; Monkey King Rescued Himself At Ge-Jing Palace 葛藟宮悟空自救.] Monkey King put Qin Gui into a calabash and turned him into thick liquid. He then offered the liquid to General Yue4 Fei for the redress of frame-up. Yue4 rebuffed the invitation and said scornfully that even half a bite of the trator's flesh would make his body stink for half a year.

Monkey King took off his robe and left the Gate of Hell for the Mystery World. There he met a self-claimed "New Ancient 新古人" who could not go back into Ancient World, had to stay and open a restaurant business.
Monkey King then asked him how could he return to Blue Green World so that he could continue accompanying Monk Tάng to the Western Journey. The New Ancient answered: "Trace your way back. The way you came is the way you leave." He pushed Monkey King as his last word fell.

The push of The New Ancient pushed Monkey King into another Future Mirror, which opened the beginning of my novel [American West Journey 美國西遊記].

American West Journey 2020, By Yáng-Fú   楊福 (茯)

[American West Journey  美國西遊記] ought to be titled [Addendum of West Journey Supplement 補西遊補], for it follows the 10th chapter [Mirror Of The Future 未來鏡] of [West Journey Supplement 西遊補] written by Dông Shuo 董說 in the Míng Dynasty 明代1368-1644.

While my version comes after Dông's, Dông's enlarges version is an addition to the original novel [JOURNEY TO THE WEST 西遊記] written by Wú Chéng-En 吳承恩 in the Míng Dynasty.

In 10th chapter [Mirror Of The Future 未來鏡] of [West Journey Supplement 西遊補], the push of The New Ancient pushed Monkey King into another Future Mirror, which opened the beginning of my novel [American West Journey 美國西遊記].

As Monkey King wandered into the further future. He paused at the years of the 21st century, "A century of the Chinese", so it's been predicted. Monk Tάng and his team will therefore suddenly find themselves in "America 美國", a land commonly known as "Beautiful Land" by the Chinese. In reality, those who have ventured here have simply wasted their lives.

Nevertheless, Monk Tάng and his team soon became swollen-headed, fallen into illusion and frame-up of the Demon Lust. Mackerel Spirit (The Demon Lust) as mentioned earlier intended to take advantage of the situation. His immediate target was always Monkey King. Again, Mackerel let Monkey King develop his desire and let it go wild in his dreams. He then planned to corrupt him while he was going deeper and deeper in his self-indulgent dream.

The whole story takes place in Monkey King's dream.
